Kittitas County, WA - 02/23/2026 - The Kittitas County Conference of Governments (KCCOG) has formally submitted a letter to the Central Washington University Board of Trustees emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong partnership between the university and the communities of Kittitas County. The letter expresses appreciation for the collaborative leadership demonstrated by CWU President Dr. Jim Wohlpart in fostering regional engagement and economic development.
The letter underscores Central Washington University’s role as a cornerstone institution for the region’s economic vitality, workforce development, and long-term community prosperity. KCCOG represents Kittitas County and the cities of Cle Elum, Ellensburg, Kittitas, Roslyn, and the Town of South Cle Elum. “Central Washington University is far more than an academic institution — it is a key public asset and an economic engine for our entire region,” said Cory Wright, Kittitas County Commissioner, and representative on KCCOG. “Our communities depend on a strong and stable university that continues to engage meaningfully with local partners.” In its letter, KCCOG highlighted several areas where university leadership has strengthened regional collaboration, including: • Economic Collaboration: Aligning university resources with regional economic development goals. • Strategic Communication: Maintaining consistent dialogue with local government leaders. • Institutional Stewardship: Focusing on long-term sustainability during a challenging period for higher education. The organization acknowledged the complex internal challenges currently facing the university and the difficult funding environment for higher education across Washington State. While KCCOG acknowledges the limitations of its insight and, thus, does not take positions on internal governance matters, it values the constructive working relationship that has developed between local governments and the university’s administration. The letter was approved by KCCOG on a closely divided 6–5 vote, reflecting differences of opinion mostly on procedural considerations. While all members affirm the importance of continued collaboration with CWU and expressed confidence in the partnership’s role in supporting regional prosperity, the minority felt it more appropriate to remain neutral. Despite this, the majority felt the concerns compelling enough to warrant making an official comment. “KCCOG remains committed to working alongside the Board of Trustees and university leadership to ensure Central Washington University continues to thrive as an integral part of Kittitas County,” Wright said.
