Kittitas County, WA - 04/30/2025 - May is the month to get moving, eat less sugar, drink more water, make “preventive” a priority, and know your health numbers. Be safe, healthy, and strong.
As the sun comes out and our community becomes more active, the Kittitas County Coroner’s Office encourages health and safety. May is a month with many celebrations to bring national awareness to these causes. A few standouts include National Public Health Week, Heal the Children Month, National Youth Traffic Safety Month, Family Wellness Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, Blood Pressure Month, Childhood Depression Awareness Day, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, and Childhood Stroke Awareness Day. National Public Health Week begins May 7th and ends May 13th. What began in 1952 as a week to champion healthier living has become a week to highlight issues that can improve health and happiness. Address the root causes of poor health and disease. To celebrate your health, consider sharing healthy recipes with friends and family, joining challenges like Move Your Way at health.gov, and learning more about resources available via the Kittitas County Community Health website. As part of Heal the Children month the American Medical Association (AMA) wants you to know that Child Abuse is medically diagnosable. Abuse affects children both physically and mentally. AMA studies indicate “boys and girls are similarly abused at rates of 48% and 51% respectively”. If you witness child abuse call 9-1-1 or the National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453. You can observe Heal the Children Month by volunteering with a non-profit, donating to charity, or helping to organize child-friendly activities in your community. Eastern Washington University has created a guide with 22 pages of local and national resources available in Kittitas County. Help with everything from mental and physical wellness to financial, housing, and transportation assistance.
