Kittitas County, WA - 07/29/2019 - Members of the Sheriff's Marine Unit responded to a call for help Saturday around 3:00PM. A large group of rafters was reported to have been swept into a log jam near Ringer
Members of the Sheriff's Water Rescue Team found 12 people from Western Washington had tied their rafts together and launched up-river from the Ringer area. They made it to the first corner and were swept into a large log jam. Several from the group were knocked off the rafts and went under the log jam, while others were swept down river, where they were caught in the lower part of the log jam. Per Undersheriff Clay Myers, "These people were very fortunate. This part of the river requires maneuverable watercraft, such as drift boats or rafts with rowing frames, and experienced operators. Lashing small rafts together all but eliminates your ability to maneuver or avoid hazards. We encourage people to call the Sheriff's Marine Unit prior to floating our waterways. We will assist you in equipment choices and float locations upon request".
