Reserve Deputy Program

Reserve Deputy ProgramThe Kittitas County Sheriff's Office has a highly regarded unit of approximately 20 volunteer Reserve personnel who hold commissions as law enforcement officers. These deputies provide the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office and the citizens of the county in excess of 5,000 hours of volunteer service per year.

Applications (PDF file format188k) to the Reserve Unit are accepted annually beginning the 1st of September and ending November 15th of each year, the selection process is usually not completed until early December, at which time all applications are screened for acceptance. Those individuals meeting our requirements are then required to pass an oral board/interview. Candidates completing this process are then required to pass a polygraph exam and a psychological exam.

Successful candidates are then required to attend and complete the state-mandated Reserve Academy. The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office coordinates an annual Reserve Academy which is accredited by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and is in excess of 330 hours in length. This academy is conducted from January through May.

Cadets completing this process are furnished with uniforms and a ballistic vest.

Reserve deputies are required to provide a minimum of 16 hours per month to remain active. Monthly reports are submitted detailing activity. Ongoing training is provided on a bi-monthly basis.

Although the primary duties of the Reserve Deputies are to augment the Patrol and Corrections Division's of the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office, they are permitted to work solo-status once they have obtained a desired level of proficiency, which is evaluated through a field training program.

Some of the assignments worked in this capacity are responding to 911 calls, traffic emphasis, arrest warrant emphasis, prisoner transports, School security, community events and court security.
