Sheriff's Message![]() Sheriff Gene Dana As the population and problems grow, our deputies will be responding to increasing calls for service. Our Sheriff's Office has the best training and state of the art technology, to help us do our job. Working with the public, we will be innovative thinkers and problem solvers. By promoting citizen involvement along with partnerships with public officials and other criminal justice agencies, all citizens should be well served and feel safe while in Kittitas County. It is an honor to serve the citizens of Kittitas County as the Sheriff for a third term. This is my 36th year in Law Enforcement and I have watched law as enforcement has evolve with better training and technology to improve officer safety and service to the citizens that we serve. From using a simple notebook, revolver, shot gun and a single rotating light on top of the patrol car, we now have on board computers, GPS units, video cameras, semi automatic weapons, tasers, LED emergency lights and a long list of new tools to help officers do their job. I believe that we have some of the best trained and equipped officers in the State of Washington. Crime StatisticsDuring 2008 the Sheriff's Office responded to 17,653 calls received by the KITTCOM consolidate dispatch center. This is an increase of 24% over 2007. Through intelligence led/problem oriented policing we have kept a lid on property and violent crimes. To help deal with the increasing calls for service, the citizens of Kittitas County approved a 3/10th of a penny sales tax to fund six additional deputies and an evidence clerk. Already there has been huge impact with better visibility, quicker response times and improved safety for our citizens and officers around the county. The following employees are funded by the law and justice sales tax as requested by the good people of our county:

for All Violent Crimes, 2007 In 2009 we continue to focus on accreditation under the WASPC revised standards and are registered for reaccreditation in 2010. Our corrections facility remains one of the worst overcrowded in the State. We continually exceed 100 inmates in a facility originally designed for 45. We have jail contracts with several jurisdictions to keep our numbers manageable. We are spending about $2000.00 a day to send inmates to other institutions. The county continues to explore options for remodeling or adding onto our existing public safety building. |
