Kittitas (pronounced 'KITT-i-tass') County is located in central Washington State. It spans from the lush forested Cascade Mountains to the upper Yakima River Valley plains and the Columbia River.
Kittitas County, WA - 06/27/2016 - Sunday evening at approximately 7:00 p.m. members of the Sheriff's Swift Water Rescue Team responded to an overturned kayak on the river, between Irene Rinehart ponds and the boat launch.
Using an inflatable jet boat, team members found 29 year old Amber Monroe of Ellensburg, in the water, clinging to a fallen tree that was wedged into the rock diversion. Ms. Monroe was rescued and transported to the boat launch where members from Kittitas Valley Fire & Rescue treated her for extended cold water exposure. The Sheriff's Office would like to remind you that the conditions on the river can change minute to minute. Please consider your vessel type, your skill level, the river and weather conditions when planning your recreational ventures. The most prominent hazards on the Yakima River are log jams and sweepers (trees or low branches obstructing portions of the channel along the river's edge). Personal floatation devices (life jackets) are required on all vessels when operated on the Inland Waterways of Washington State. Actually wearing your life jacket can greatly improve your survivability and we want all our recreationalists to survive and enjoy themselves. For more information on water conditions and/or the boating laws in Kittitas County, please call 509-925-8534 and ask to speak with a member of the Sheriff's Marine Patrol Unit.
