Kittitas (pronounced 'KITT-i-tass') County is located in central Washington State. It spans from the lush forested Cascade Mountains to the upper Yakima River Valley plains and the Columbia River.
Kittitas County, WA - 11/06/2014 - Construction on the Kittitas Highway Safety Improvement Project will start Monday, November 10, 2014 with mobilization of construction equipment and materials. Then on Monday, November 17, 2014, Belsaas & Smith will begin the actual road construction. The speed limit within the construction zone will be reduced to 35 mph.
THE PROJECT This project will consist of various safety improvements as follows: intersection improvements for improved turning movements; shoulder turnouts will be constructed for law enforcement; shoulders will be widened for bicycle and pedestrian traffic; bridges will be replaced to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian traffic; and the roadway widening requires existing culverts be replaced or retrofitted. These safety enhancements will make the road safer to travel and help meet growing traffic demands in this area. WORK ZONES Work zones can present an unfamiliar situation to many drivers. Careful attention should be paid to driving through any work zone, as the driver’s action can impact the safety of everyone in the work zone. Driver-related actions that affect work zone safety include speeding, distracted driving (such as cell phones, texting, and radios), inattentive driving, and aggressive driving. The main type of work zone crash is a rear end collision. “According to the Federal Highways Administration, 4,400 persons die in road construction work zone crashes annually. We ask that drivers raise awareness while traveling through work zones to make certain everyone makes it home safely,” said Kirk Holmes, County Public Works Director. “It typically only takes a few extra seconds to travel at work zone speeds.” When approaching a road construction zone please remember to slow down and give the equipment and workers plenty of space! The lobby of the Public Works Department at 411 N. Ruby Street in Ellensburg will have a work zone safety display set up for the duration of the Kittitas Highway construction
