Kittitas County, WA - 07/23/2014 - As harvest season approaches, FISH Food Bank is looking for help with gleaning. Each season, many local growers donate produce to the food bank. The process of collecting this extra food is called gleaning.
There are several ways to help FISH with gleaning. Farmers and gardeners are welcome to bring extra produce to FISH. Produce can also be packed in small boxes for FISH employees to come and pick up. Or, volunteers can contact FISH if they are interested in facilitating a gleaning event. “FISH relies on seasonal produce to enhance the fresh food selection at the food bank.” Roger McCune, Food Bank Director, said. “The gleaning from orchards and fields supplies food banks with produce which can be put in cold storage for the winter.” Community members can drop off food and produce at FISH Monday through Friday from 8am to 5:30pm. The food bank is located at 301 West 2nd Avenue in Ellensburg. For more information about gleaning opportunities and how to create a volunteer group, contact the FISH food bank in Ellensburg at 509.925.5990
