FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Flood Damage and Road Closures

Kittitas County, WA - 05/17/2011 - Commissioners declare state of emergency due to flooding in Kittitas County. Sheriff activates Emergency Operations Center. Public meeting set for 6:00 PM. tonight at the Ellensburg Event Center. Damage to transportation infrastructure, private property, power and gas lines. Some homes are cut off due to driveways washed out and changes in water-course location. Roads and recreational areas closed.

A Public Meeting has been scheduled for 6:00 P.M. tonight in the Home Arts Building at the Ellensburg Event Center. Representatives from emergency management, power companies, water purveyors and others will provide reports and answer questions. The agenda for the meeting is attached.

Emergency Managers in Kittitas County activated their emergency operations center and requested Commissioners declare a local state of emergency Monday morning citing damage to roads, bridges, irrigation structures, private property and power outages.

The flooding has resulted in the following closures;

Taneum Road #3300 is washed out and closed at the Taneum Camp Ground.
Manastash Road is closed just above Cove Road except for residents and emergency vehicles.
Cooke Canyon Road is closed 1/2 mile from the Coleman Junction.
Hanson Road is restricted from Barns to Cove.
Peoh Point is closed 2.5 miles up.
Cove Road is closed from the North at the Bridge, just North of Manastash Road.

There is no access to Buck Meadows, Taneum Junction, Icewater Campground or any of the trails in these drainages. It is highly unlikely these restrictions will be lifted before Memorial Day.

There have been no reported injuries and or loss of life during this event.

Tomorrow, the county will begin the transition from response to recovery as the waters continue to recede and damage assessments can begin.

Photographs are attached and depict aerial and local shots of some affected areas.
