Fire Debris requires 15-Day Waiting Period
Kittitas County, WA - 08/18/2012 - As cleanup efforts begin in the areas impacted by the Taylor Bridge Fire, property owners need to be aware that burned debris cannot be accepted at the Kittitas County Transfer Stations until 15 days after the fire occurred on their property. Due to safety concerns at County facilities, the 15-day waiting period is necessary to assure that all burned material is completely extinguished. Material with live embers may cause risk for fire at the transfer station or landfill when combined with other waste.
Additionally, loading debris and transporting it before all fire potential is suppressed may cause personal and property risks. If burned material is moved too soon, transporting it introduces significant airflow which may lead to reignition. “The safest option at this point is to simply leave the debris in place during the 15-day waiting period,” stated Patty Johnson, Kittitas County Solid Waste Director. “Disturbing and transporting the debris before it is completely burned out can cause significant injury to people and property and isn’t worth the risk.” After the 15-day waiting period, debris from the Taylor Bridge Fire may be accepted at either the Upper or Lower County transfer stations.
