Breast and Cervical Health Program

The focus of this program is early detection of breast and cervical cancer. It is a program that provides eligible women with free health exams. Health exams include a brief medical history, pelvic exam, clinical breast exam, pap test, a screening mammogram, and patient education about breast self-exam and the need for regular breast and cervical screening. The Kittitas County Public Health Department coordinates eligibility for the program and exams are performed by local participating clinics.

Outreach workers can provide presentations to groups about the Breast and Cervical Health Program and general information about breast and cervical cancer.

  • have an income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level (see chart)

Issues

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray of your breast. This x-ray can show breast changes and detect small lumps that cannot be felt. It is taken at the hospital or other location that has a special kind of x-ray machine and trained workers.

What is a pap test?

During a women's health exam your nurse or doctor examines your pelvic area. As a part of this exam, a small, soft brush is used to take a few cells from the cervix (the opening of the womb). These cells are then sent to a lab. This is a pap test.

Facts & Figures

  • Over 90% of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease
  • Over 40.000 women die each year of breast cancer in the United States
  • One in eight women will have breast cancer in their lifetime
When breast cancer is found in its early stages, your changes of surviving are at least 90% or better.
