4H ProgramKittitas County has a strong 4-H Club program for youth age 8 and 3rd grade up to age 19. In 2007 there were 412 members enrolled in 32 clubs. The 4-H year starts October 1 and ends September 30. To complete the year a 4-H'er must complete a record book, be in a showmanship, give a demonstration, attend club meetings and complete a project. New members can enroll in a 4-H Club October 1 through January 31 each year. 4-H teaches life skills: responsibility, problem solving, decision-making, increased self-esteem, record keeping, communication, leadership and project skills/knowledge. VolunteersThe 4-H program relies on adult volunteers who work with youth to manage the 4-H club and coordinate the educational opportunities. In 2006 there were 112 4-H leaders in Kittitas County. These volunteers join together as the Kittitas County 4-H Council to give leadership and direction to the Kittitas County 4-H program. WSU Extension offers leader training on general topics as well as specific projects. Popular 4-H projects in Kittitas County are:
Kittitas County 4-H Challenge ProgramThe 4-H Portable Challenge program incorporates a series of games and activities where groups and individual tasks are conducted under careful supervision. The Challenge Course offers a series of manageable challenges. Completion of each initiative requires adult leaders and youth to learn and develop the skills of goal setting, problem solving, decision making, communication with others and applying oneself with total commitment. In the process, participants learn how to reflect upon their experiences and gain insight into personal and social behaviors and attitudes which they can apply in different settings. The 4-H Portable Challenge course is a "learn by doing" mechanism that gives youth immediate feedback and personal and group success. It provides a way for groups and individuals to learn teamwork and solve problems while experiencing fun and adventure at the same time. The 4-H Portable Challenge program is about encouraging leadership potential in youth and creating and learning opportunities using the Challenge Course. Elementary Agriculture Appreciation FairElementary Agriculture Appreciation Day takes place at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds in the last week of March. This is an educational program of Washington State University Extension that educates third grade students in Kittitas County schools on where their food comes from. Kittitas County has an outstanding agriculture industry and heritage. The sponsors for this event are Kittitas County Cattlemen, Kittitas County CattleWomen, Kittitas County Conservation District, Kittitas County Crop Improvement, Kittitas County Farm Bureau, and Kittitas County Water Purveyors. Teachers are given curriculum packets related to Kittitas County Agriculture before the event to prepare students for the day. The students rotate through stations pertaining to agricultural commodities grown in Kittitas County. Stations that students rotate through are Conservation, Livestock, Hay, Noxious Weed, Farm Equipment, Germ City/Hand Washing, Horse Wagon Ride, Row Crops, Wheat, and Water.
